Murderess (2023) by Eva NATHENA

On Tuesday 16 April 2024 at 19:00 and on Wednesday 17 April 2024 at 21:00 the film MURDERESS (Greece, 2023, 97 min, colour) directed by Eva NATHENA will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the original version (Greek language) with English subtitles. The film is not suitable for children under 12.

SYNOPSIS

Early 1900’s on a Greek island. Hadoula, who lost her husband at a young age, is a woman who has learned to survive in a male – dominated and extremely patriarchal society, the hard way. Hadoula carries a difficult burden within her. Like a baton passed on to her from her mother and the previous generations, she is supposed to accept the devaluation and lower fate of women. But Hadoula reacts. Her personal, internal, bubbling revolution is soon externalized. The victims of her outburst are the little girls of the island, whom she sets free from the social and economic burden that their existence entails… by taking their lives. Her actions will bring her face to face with the authorities. Forcing her to leave her home and escape to her refuge, nature. As much as her faith and morals dictate that she has done the right thing, her transgenerational trauma follows her everywhere. The end comes as a redemption.

The story is based on Alexandros Papadiamantis’ “social novel” of the same name, a landmark of Greek literature.

TRAILER

DIRECTOR´S STATEMENT

This film will not attempt a criminal or forensic approach. It will penetrate the way Papadiamantis infiltrated the soul of his heroine – way, until that moment, unprecedented literary. This is the first main axis of the film. The second is the historical imprint of the period around 1900, as a social poll. The story, that is, what really happened at the time, is what created a heroine like the Murderess. For these two axes, the materials we borrow, in order to put this narrative in a magnifying glass, are three main tools: History, Sociology and Psychiatry – all three with current standards. The first, History, has made its assessment concerning the second one, that is, the social structures and the position of women at the time. Both these psychoanalytic data illuminate the deeper root of the creation of this heroine, which is not just the invention of its author, but a true heroine of popular tragedy – and as such will be represented by the film. The maternal element in the film (what we call the baton of life), the oppressive co-dependence in the mother-daughter relationship co-operates as the cause of the murders and what is taking place. The institutionalised dowry for daughters was abolished in Greece in 1983. A hidden till today secret covered the infanticides of the girls. The film tries to bring it to light.

Dignity (2022) by Dimitris KATSIMIRIS

On Tuesday 19 March 2024 at 19:00 and on Wednesday 20 March 2024 at 21:00 the film DIGNITY (Greece, 2022, 75 min, colour) directed by Dimitris Katsimiris will be screened in cinema Utopia, in the original version (Greek language) with English subtitles. The film is not suitable for children under 12.

SYNOPSIS

Mr. Dimitris, an 80-year-old man, after his wife’s death, has left the village to live in the city with his son and daughter-in-law. On account of his birthday, however, his son calls the other family members to tell them that he is no longer able to take care of him. Another solution must be found, requiring that everyone should take their responsibility. Secrets and mistakes of the past will then come to the surface, something that upsets the family and leads to an inevitable dramatic finale.

TRAILER

DIRECTOR´S STATEMENT

“Dignity” is taking place inside the four walls of a flat. The claustrophobic environment as well as the camera that moves constantly and close to the heroes increase the intensity of the moment and create asphyxiation.

The one and only location captures our gaze without giving us the chance to take a breath due to the fast pace.

What matters is not what is said, but what is artfully hidden. Many important phrases are heard off-camera, thus giving the sense of the unexpected and the incidental.

The extremely low budget of  63K allotted to the making of this DIY film was no obstacle for the director’s vision to create his first full-length film.  The use of one-takes, the absolute freedom of the frame throughout its duration, as well as the many methodical rehearsals/improvisations of the actors that took place on the set before the shooting days, are elements that contribute to the depiction of a realistic universe.

TRAILER

trailer

DIRECTOR´S STATEMENT

I am a woman, actress and director. I am an optimistic and cheerful person interested in having a humorous and optimistic view even in the most difficult circumstances and this is what I have always tried to achieve in my films. I would like to make a documentary film about Afghanistan which would be different from previous ones: with humor, cheerfulness but also having an educational value. This film will reflect not only life in Afghanistan, but also the general world situation. Karim Asir, will be the main character of the film and through him we will explore the story of laughter in Afghanistan and beyond. Οver the centuries and in various religions, laughter has often been criticized and considered a threat. We will follow Karim to his performances, where, using Charlie Chaplin’s model, he performs comic ‘gags’ and pantomime, but also educates his compatriots on important social issues. I have known Karim Asir since my earlier shootings in Afghanistan (2012) and in addition he was one of my students at the University of Kabul at the Theatre Arts Department. He is an outstanding man who has achieved a lot within a few years.

We will explore comedy and laughter in Afghanistan, in the Muslim world and also in different religions. We will talk with people about the meaning of laughter in our lives. Laughter has a way of instantly connecting people and is one of the most basic and fundamental ways in which we communicate as human beings.
